Rock Lee vs. Gaara ist der beste Kampf in Naruto, und vielleicht im ganzen Anime

It was almost 20 years ago now (in America) that Rock Lee jumped over the balcony and got ready for his fight against Gaara.

Right before this, Neji told Naruto that, “A failure will always be a failure. There’s no changing that!” Naruto charges at Neji, but Rock Lee intervenes and stops him, telling Naruto that, “I get where you’re coming from, believe me. But all fighting must be done officially in a match! The failure beats the gifted genius through sheer effort. Wouldn’t that make for an exciting match?”

Lee didn’t know it then, but that very battle, one where the failure beats the genius, was potentially about to happen with him against Gaara, someone the viewer knew to be far more dangerous and bloodthirsty than anyone else was ready for.

It only lasted 3 episodes, but it became the best fight in Naruto, and maybe in all of anime.

What Makes a Good Fight

In order to understand why Rock Lee vs. Gaara is the best fight in all of anime, we need to break down what elements actually constitute a “good fight.” There are a lot of metrics to go off of, like narrative weight, fight choreography, emotional stakes, and every person weighs some variables higher than others.

For example, in just Naruto alone, there are so many characters for people to fall in love with, and a lot of those characters end up throwing hands at one point or another. A main character like Sasuke has a lot of fans, so they may rank his fights higher. On the other hand, almost everyone can point to Kakashi vs. Obito as one of the better fights in the series, partly because of the animation and fight choreography, and partly because of its emotional storytelling.

There’s a whole haze of opinions and criteria to wade through, which makes evaluating fights so tricky. With no solid metric, I think the best thing to do is look at what the fight brings to the series it’s in and how it navigates some standard fight scene tropes.

What Are Some Other Good Fights?

To get in the right headspace for breaking down why Rock Lee vs. Gaara is the best fight in all of anime, we need to first look at some of the other best fights, helping construct the larger narrative of fight scenes.

Goku vs. Frieza (Dragon Ball Z)

Goku looks back at Frieza

The most iconic fight in almost all of Dragon Ball is also one of its best. It’s a foundational fight in anime canon, and it’s the birthplace of the Super Saiyan. Does the fight look cool? Absolutely it does. The colors on Planet Namek and the darkening green sky are the perfect background for Goku and Frieza to just wail on each other.

As a singular fight, there’s a lot to love about Goku and Frieza’s back and forth, pushing each other to their limits and then some. Unfortunately, the fight loses some steam when you compare it to the series as a whole.

For example, the fight is Goku’s way of stopping Frieza, but like Goku always does, he doesn’t actually stop him and his genocidal mania. Soon Frieza and King Cold come to Earth, and Trunks is the one to stop them. Narratively, the fight isn’t unique either, as in Dragon Ball there’s always going to be someone new to fight, and the main character is going to power up, and then power up some more to stop them. The fight is formulaic in that sense.

Leading up to the fight, we’re also introduced to the idea of “Zenkai,” a Saiyan ability where their power substantially increases after taking and recovering from major damage. These losses on the path to victory, building the characters' physical and mental skills, are now synonymous with anime.

Luffy vs. Kaido (One Piece)

Kaido and Luffy have a staredown

You could really examine any One Piece fight, but I’m going to specifically talk about Luffy vs. Kaido. For visuals, it’s the pinnacle of what One Piece has to offer. Luffy has always had some interesting attacks and transformations, and with his Gear 5 form, there’s not much of a limit on what he can do anymore. It’s exciting to watch, but almost every One Piece fight falls into the same repetitive motions that hurt them in the end.

To win, Luffy needs to push himself to the limit, and then some. Every fight is a way for him to lose and then strengthen his abilities even more when he inevitably gets back up again, he can hit the bad guy even harder and win. He does it against Kaido, Doflamingo, Crocodile, etc.

Sukuna vs. Mahoraga (Jujutsu Kaisen)

Sukuna looks at Mahoraga through his hands

Jujutsu Kaisen is a series with an incredibly unique power system that lends itself to some pretty off-the-wall fights, but the farther up the ladder of power you get, a lot still comes down to how hard you can hit.

Sukuna vs. Mahoraga is an explosive fight where there is a really tight edit exploring the back and forth between the two fighters, but throughout the fight there’s always an understanding of who the winner is going to be. Sukuna has been endlessly hyped up, and Mahoraga is always adapting, trying to keep up with him and get the upper hand.

While it’s one of the best flurries of fists and abilities in anime from the last couple decades, at the end of the day, you know who is going to win. Mahoraga makes it look close, but then Sukuna reveals he always had his Fuga technique up his sleeve.

It feels like the characters aren’t acting honestly. Sukuna is toying with his food and that tracks with his personality, but it also just feels as if the animators and author Gege Akutami are going out of their way to pander to me. I appreciate it, and I would rather this than nothing because it is still a visual marvel, but that’s where my preferences lean toward something like Rock Lee vs. Gaara.

Why Rock Lee vs. Gaara Is the GOAT Fight

I did a lot of talking, so now I need to put my money where my mouth is: why is the fight between Rock Lee and Gaara the best in all of anime, and why is it more than just vibes? Without digging into the technical minutiae, it is the best fight in anime because, amongst other things, it has the most emotional sincerity.

Lee takes off his leg weights

Within the context of the series and what mattered to the main characters of Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura at this point, it didn’t matter whether Rock Lee or Gaara won - they were only focused on moving farther in the tournament and becoming Chunin. For viewers, we didn’t know what Orochimaru, Gaara, and the Hidden Sand’s plan was, so it technically didn’t matter to us either.

Going into the actual fight itself, there was a dramatic irony in that we knew how cold, callous, and bloodthirsty Gaara was, whereas all of the other shinobi just knew he was strong, making it through the Forest of Death without a scratch on him. On the other side of the fight, Rock Lee was covered in scratches, and we knew how selfless he was, going out of his way to protect Sakura and the rest of Squad 7.

Lee hits Gaara with a kick to the head

It was going to be a fight between what appeared to be an unbeatable monster and the guy who can only use taijutsu. What followed was a spectacle of movement, weight, and consequence, something deeply compelling and tragic. Whether your favorite moment is Lee taking off his leg weights, Gaara’s Sand Coffin on Lee (if you’re a sicko), or Might Guy stepping in and stopping the fight, you cannot deny this fight is something special.

You can’t help but get emotional seeing Lee lose and then try to keep going while unconscious. Standard shōnen tropes dictate that the fight here is to show how capable Gaara was and that Lee was destined to lose, but it never felt that way. Lee kept meeting the wall that was Gaara, and kept pushing further and further, slowly tearing it down.

Lee starts opening his inner gates

Even Gaara was shaken after the fight. In the fight itself, he had a physical shell of sand that kept protecting him from Lee’s violent and hard-hitting attacks. However, while Gaara’s physical armor is unbroken, there is a crack in his emotional armor, one that Naruto would be able to exploit when those two met later in the story.

Even if you hate the series, you cannot deny that there is something lively and exciting about this fight, something that goes beyond just “hype.” We knew fights in Naruto could be intense and emotional, as evidenced by Kakashi vs. Zabuza and Neji vs. Hinata, but Rock Lee vs. Gaara is explosive and took this series of shadow clones and Sharingan to new physical heights.

I can understand if you have a fight that’s your favorite, but for me, nothing beats Rock Lee vs. Gaara.
